Revised MGNREGA Wages
Fresh wage rates have been notified by the central government under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for the financial year 2022-23.
Overview:
- Out of 34 Union Territories and states, 21 of them have received hikes of less than 5 percent.
- A 5 percent hike has been given to 10 states.
- Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura have not been given any hikes.
- This change in wage rates has been notified by the Ministry of Rural Development.
- These revised rates have been notified under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005, sub-section (1) of Section 6.
- From 1st April the changes will come into effect.
- According to the changes seen in the Consumer Price Index-Agriculture Labour, which reflects a rural areas inflation rate, MGNREGA wages are fixed.
Change in Rates
- Goa has recorded the highest increase with a 7.14 percent increase to Rs 315 per day in 2022-23 from Rs 294 per day in 2021-22.
- Meghalaya has seen the lowest hike with a 1.77 percent increase to Rs 230 per day from Rs 226 per day.
- Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh also saw a hike of less than 2 percent.
- In Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry the hike was 2 to 3 percent.
- In Odisha, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli there is an increase of 3 to 4 percent.
- In Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Telangana the wages have been increased by 4 to 5 percent.
- In Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Goa, and Karnataka the wages have been increased by more than 5 percent.
Highest MGNREGA wages
Five UTs and states with the highest wages are Haryana with wages of Rs 331 per day, Goa with Rs 315, Kerala with Rs 311, Karnataka with Rs 309, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands with Rs 308.
Lowest MGNREGA wages
The five lowest UTs and states are Tripura with Rs 212, Bihar with Rs 210, Jharkhand with Rs 210, Chhattisgarh with Rs 204, and Madhya Pradesh with Rs 204.
