Report: Kharif crop production to dip by 12%

On December 3, 2019, a private weather monitoring company, Skymet released a report on Kharif Crop outlook. According to the report, barring cotton the Kharif crops are expected to witness a drop-in production by 4.5% to 12% as compared to 2018-19.

Key findings of the report

Several crops such as groundnut, soybean, cotton, tur and urad were adversely affected all over the country and especially in Maharashtra. This was mainly due to excess rainfall in some areas, rainfall deficit in other areas and delayed monsoon in certain other regions. Bottom line, several parts did not receive right amount of usual monsoon rains at the right time. The report also said that rains till the end of September delayed maturity process. Excess moisture content in the soil hindered the growth of the crops.

Kharif Crops

The crops that are grown in the months of south west monsoon are called Kharif crops. It includes rice, jowar, maize, moong, bajra, cotton, groundnut, jute. In India coastal regions bring highest yield of Kharif crops. It includes millets in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, paddy in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, pulses in Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
