Recommendation of Corbevax Jab for 5-12 years

The COVID-19 vaccines subject expert panel has given its recommendation for the emergency use of the Hyderabad-based Biological E’s Corbevax for children who are aged between 5 to 11 years.

Overview:

  • This recommendation will be taken up by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to grant a formal approval in the next few days.
  • If approval is given then Corbevax will become India’s first COVID-19 vaccine for this age group.
  • In the UK and the US Pfizer’s mRNA vaccines are being administered to children aged five and above.

Administering COVID-19 vaccines in India

At present, in India COVID-19 vaccines are being administered to those above age 12. Corbevax is being administered to those aged between 12 to 14 years. Those who are aged between 15 to 18 years are receiving Covaxin. In the age group of 12 to 14 years, 2.53 crore beneficiaries have received the first dose of Corbevax, and 12,47,298 have been fully vaccinated.

About Corbevax

It is the country’s first Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) Protein sub-unit vaccine that has been indigenously developed against Covid-19. It is administered via the intramuscular route and two doses are given 28 days apart. This vaccine can be stored at temperatures ranging between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. An advance payment of Rs 1,500 crore has been paid by the central government to reserve 30 crore Corbevax doses.
