Rana Bhagwandas first Hindu Chief Justice of Pakistan passes away

First Hindu Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Rana Bhagwandas passed away in Karachi, Pakistan. He was 72 year old.
He was the first Hindu and the second non-Muslim to head of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. First non-Muslim CJP was Alvin Robert Cornelius (He was Christian).

About Rana Bhagwandas

  • Bhagwandas was born on 20 December 1942 in Naseerabad, Larkana district (now in Qamber Shahdadkot district of Sindh province).
  • He was considered an expert on constitutional law and had a postgraduate degree in Islamic Studies.
  • In 1967, two years after he started practicing as an advocate he was appointed as a judge. In 1994, he was appointed as a judge of the Sindh High Court.
  • In 2005 for first time he was appointed as acting Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) for few days and again in 2006 during the absence of then CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry.
  • During the Pakistan’s judicial crisis of 2007, he was again appointed as acting Chief Justice.
  • After his retirement from Supreme Court, he was appointed as the chairman of Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) of Pakistan. In 2009, as chairman FPSC, he had headed the interview panel for the selection of Pakistan’s Civil Servants.
