Union Health Minister will launch the Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav – a nationwide voluntary blood donation drive.

  • Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav is a nationwide voluntary blood donation drive that will be organized from September 17 to October 1 this year.
  • This special blood donation drive would be organized as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • Registration for this mega drive can be made using E-Raktkosh portal and Aarogya Setu app.
  • October 1 is observed as the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day and Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav is scheduled to conclude on this occasion.
  • The nationwide drive aims to collect up to 1 lakh units of blood from voluntary blood donors on a single day.
  • One unit of blood is equal to 350 ml. A normal healthy individual has 5 to 6 litres of blood and can donate blood every 3 months.
  • Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav seeks to raise public awareness about the importance of regular non-remunerated voluntary blood donations.
  • Its main purpose is to create a repository of voluntary donors so that can be easily accessed and the need for replacement of blood donation is reduced.
  • As part of this drive, every blood bank in the country is encouraged to organize at least one blood donation camp.
  • Currently, India has more than 3,900 blood banks having sufficient storage capacity and facilities for processing it.
  • Till date, 3,600 blood banks are linked with the e-Raktkosh portal and efforts are being made to link the rest with the portal.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is the Indian Government’s initiative that celebrates India’s 75 years of independence and its history, culture and achievements. It was launched on March 12, 2021, which started a 75-week countdown to the 75th anniversary of the Indian independence. It will conclude on August 15, 2023.
