Rajesh Kumar Singh Appointed Defence Secretary

Rajesh Kumar Singh has recently taken on the role of Defence Secretary in the South Block, New Delhi. His appointment to this high-ranking position marks an important step in his career. Before officially stepping into this role, he served as the Defence Secretary-designate since August 20, 2024.

Background

Rajesh Kumar Singh is an experienced civil servant. He joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1989 from the Kerala cadre. Just before this appointment, he was Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, a position he held from April 2023 to August 2024.

Tribute to Soldiers

On his first day as Defence Secretary, Singh paid tribute to India’s armed forces by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. He expressed his admiration for the bravery and dedication of Indian soldiers, highlighting their role as a key source of strength and pride for the nation.

Previous Positions

Throughout his career, Singh has held several important roles. He was the Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, where he worked on policies to support livestock and dairy sectors. He also served as Director of Works and Urban Transport in the Ministry of Urban Development. In Kerala, he took on responsibilities as Secretary of Urban Development and Finance Secretary, gaining valuable experience in governance and administration.

Successor Information

Singh takes over the position of Defence Secretary from Shri Giridhar Aramane, who retired on October 31, 2024. Aramane, an IAS officer of the 1988 batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, had a notable career in public service, leaving behind a strong legacy as Singh steps into this role.
