Rajesh Bhushan takes charge as health secretary

Senior Bureaucrat from Bihar Cadre, Rajesh Bhushan took charge as the Union Health Secretary after succeeding Preeti Sudan, who was given a three-month extension in April and finally demitted office on Friday.

Background

He was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty at the Health Ministry in April this year and finally has given the top post in the ministry on superannuation of Preeti Sudan. It took place in a minor top-level bureaucratic reshuffle in the government.

Significance

Amidst the COVID 19 pandemic, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is the most important department in the government tackling all kinds of issues faced due to the deadly virus. Hence an experienced hand such as Bhushan, who is a 1987-batch officer, will come in handy to handle the ground-level situation as well. He has already been involved in managing this situation and has hands-on experience in this.
