Rajasthan Government notifies 5% quota for Gujjars and other SBCs
Rajasthan government has issued a notification to provide 5 per cent quota to Gujjars and other Special Backward Classes (SBC).
The notification was issued by state government under the Rajasthan Special Backward Classes Reservation Act, 2015.
The Act came into force from October 16, 2015. It will provide 5% reservation in educational institutes and government jobs to Gujjars, Raibari, Banjara and Gadiya Lohar communities in the state.
Background
- Earlier in September 2015, Rajasthan state assembly had passed two separate bills to provide reservation in educational institutions and government jobs.
- Rajasthan Special Backward Classes Reservation Bill, 2015 seeks to provide 5% quota to SBC and Rajasthan Economically Backward Classes Reservation Bill, 2015 seeks to provide 14% reservation to Economically Backward Classes (EBC) of unreserved categories.
- With the passing of these bills, total reservation in Rajasthan had exceeded the 50 per cent reservation cap/limit laid down by the Supreme Court.
