Railways: Smart Event Tracking System
Smart Event Tracking System (SETS) is a Google Maps-based planning and analysis tool. It is in-house software of the Indian Railways.
Working of Smart Event Tracking System
- Smart Event Tracking System (SETS) is being used to tackle the problem of cattle getting run over by the trains. Kilometer stamps on electrical masts along the railway tracks are mapped and the exact location of ‘cattle run over’ is fed into the system. It will become easy to identify the location of the accidents and observe the patterns of such accidents.
- This system can also be used to observe the patterns of incidents of chain-pulling, absence of gatemen at level crossings, etc.
Plugging the gaps
- Using SETS, six instances of trains hitting cattle on a stretch near Dholpur were observed by the railway officials of the Agra division. On physical inspection, a gap was found on the side of a Road over Bridge (ROB) on a highway, through which cattle were coming onto the tracks and are being hit by the trains. So this gap was plugged.
- At another place, railway officials found that the gateman was missing at a level crossing. This gap was also plugged by officials.
Smart Event Tracking System (SETS) is crucial for Prayagraj-based North Central Railway (NCR), which witnessed 6,500 cases of cattle run over in 2020-21.
