Railway Stations to be classified on Waste Water Output

The CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) is to classify railway stations based on the quantity of waste water generated by them and also based on the disposal of untreated water that are drained into the municipal drain systems.

Highlights

The Railway Stations that are generating waste water equal to or more than 100 kilo litres per day are to be classified as red stations. The stations that are generating waste water greater than 10 kilo litres per day are to be classified under the category of orange. The stations that are generating less than 10 kilo litres of waste water per day are to be put in the category of Green.

Legislation

The categorization has been done under the provisions of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. The main objectives of the act are to control, prevent and abate water pollution. It assesses pollution level and punishes polluters.

The act also provides provisions to constitute central and state boards to prevent water pollution, discharge sewage or trade effluents.
