Railway orders suspension of wrestler Sushil Kumar

Northern Railway has ordered suspension of wrestler Sushil Kumar after he was arrested by Delhi Police in a murder case.

Why he was arrested?

Winner of Olympic medal, Sushil Kumar, was arrested on May 23 for his involvement in death of a 23 years old wrestler, Sagar Dhankhar, at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. Apart from him, his associate and co-accused Ajay was also arrested.

Where he was posted?

Sushil Kumar was appointed as senior commercial manager in Northern Railway and he was on deputation with Delhi government since 2015. He was posted as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Chhatrasal Stadium to look after development of sports at school level. His deputation was extended in 2020 and he had applied for an extension for 2021. But extension was rejected and Kumar was sent back to his parent cadre, Northern Railway.

About Sushil Kumar

He is an Indian wrestler who carried Indian flag at the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympics. He won 2008 Olympic medal, which happens to be second medal for India in wrestling. He also received India’s highest honour for sportsperson, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, in 2009. In 2012 London Olympics, he won a silver medal after losing final to Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu.
