Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, 29, announced her retirement after being disqualified from the Olympics for being 100 grams overweight before her gold medal bout in the 50 kg category. She appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to be awarded a joint silver medal, citing severe dehydration from extreme weight-cutting measures. Phogat, a three-time Olympian in different weight classes, became the first international wrestler to defeat reigning champion Yui Susaki and the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final in 2024. She is a multiple Commonwealth Games gold medalist and has won two World Wrestling Championship bronze medals.

India’s men’s hockey team won bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics, defeating Spain 2-1. This victory marks India’s first consecutive Olympic hockey medals since 1972. The match took place at Yves du Manoir Stadium in Paris. Spain led early with a penalty stroke by Marc Miralles in the second quarter. India equalized before half-time with a drag flick goal by captain Harmanpreet Singh. The Netherlands won gold, beating Germany 2-1 in a shootout in the final.

Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal in men’s javelin throw at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a throw of 89.45 meters, his best of the season. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won gold with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters, marking Pakistan’s first gold in javelin throw. Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured the bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters. The podium highlighted the fierce competition and diversity of the Games.

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from competing in women’s freestyle wrestling finals at Paris Olympics due to being overweight by just100 grams exceeding limit set by wrestling rules governing weight categories.She had reached finals after defeating wrestlers including Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Yui Susaki & European champion Oksana Livach.

The Department of Posts released commemorative stamps for the Paris Olympics. These limited-edition stamps celebrate significant events, personalities, and issues. They are available at Philatelic Bureaux and through the Philatelic Deposit Account Scheme. Stamps can honor institutions on major anniversaries, personalities of national/international importance posthumously, and heritage sites. Proposals for stamps can be submitted by any Indian citizen, following specific guidelines by the Ministry of Communications.

Novak Djokovic became the fifth tennis player to achieve a Golden Slam by winning the men’s singles gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. Athletes from Russia and Belarus are banned from competing under their national flags at the Paris Olympics. Instead, they compete as Athlètes Individuals Neutres (AIN), or Individual Neutral Athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) imposed this ban after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which violated the Olympic Truce that prohibits attacks between a week before the Olympics and a week after the Paralympics.
