India has been ranked 63rd among 190 countries, as per latest Doing Business Report (DBR, 2020) of World Bank (WB). As per report, the World Bank (WB) has recognized India as one of the top 10 improvers for the third consecutive year. India’s recovery rate under resolving insolvency has improved significantly from 26.5% to 71.6%. The time taken for resolving insolvency has also come down significantly from 4.3 years to 1.6 years. India has reduced the number of procedures in granting construction permits. Apart from this, India continues to maintain its first position among South Asian countries.

Braj Raj Sharma, a 1984-batch IAS officer of J&K cadre, has been appointed as Chairman of Staff Selection Commission (SSC). He succeeded Pankaj Kumar, who recently became the new CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

The World Development Information Day (WDID) is observed every year on 24th of October to draw the attention of the world public-opinion  to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international cooperation to solve them. It aims to disseminate information and mobilize public opinion, particularly among young people, in order to create awareness of the problems of development, promoting efforts in the sphere of international cooperation for development. This special day coincides with the United Nations Day (UND) which also falls on 24th October.

The Government of India (GoI), Government of Odisha and the World Bank have recently signed a US$165 million loan agreement to support 125,000 smallholder farmers from 15 districts of  the state. The project will strengthen the resilience of smallholder farmers against adverse climate by improving access to resilient seed varieties and production technologies, diversifying towards more climate-resilient crops, and improving access to better water management and irrigation services.

Public sector Indian Overseas Bank unveiled a healthcare insurance policy through online platform in association with Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Ltd. The policy offered on real time basis to customers at the branches of Indian Overseas Bank through integration of technology of the two institutions. The co-branded healthcare policy designed by Universal Sompo General Insurance is offered with a sum insured from ₹50,000 to ₹15 lakh. The one of its kind family floater policy where the premium is charged as per the age of the proposer with no medical checkup up to the 50 years of age.

Manohar Lal Khattar represents Karnal constituency in Haryana Legislative Assembly, and was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Haryana after BJP’s win in the 2014 Haryana Legislative Assembly election. He was sworn in a second time as the Chief Minister on 27 October 2019 after making an alliance with Jannayak Janta Party post 2019 Haryana Legislative Assembly election.

Belgian Paralympic champion Marieke Vervoort ended her life through euthanasia at the age of 40. She had announced her intentions after the Rio Games in 2016 to follow that path if her degenerative condition worsened her suffering. Vervoort suffered a degenerative muscle disease that caused constant pain, paralysis in her legs and left her barely able to sleep, and gradually her life became torture. Euthanasia is legal in Belgium.

The Mohun Bagan Athletic Club conferred life membership to Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee. In 1911, Mohun Bagan became the first Indian club to win the Indian Football Association (IFA) Shield beating the East Yorkshire Regiment of the British Army in the final.

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Dilip Parikh died following a prolonged illness, said his family members. He was 82. Mr Parikh served as the 13th Chief Minister of Gujarat between October 1997 and March 1998 .

Sadako Ogata (92), a high-profile Japanese diplomat who served as the first female United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 1991 to 2000, has passed away on Oct. 22 in Tokyo.
