The Talcher coalfield, located in Odisha, is one of India's largest coal reserves, containing around 51 billion tonnes of coal. This coalfield primarily supplies coal to power stations in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh, as well as for local use in Odisha. The coal extracted is mainly bituminous, a medium-grade coal essential for electricity generation. Interestingly, while anthracite, the highest quality coal, is rare in India, lignite, the lowest grade, is found in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
