Ashoka, also known as Ashoka the Great, was the third emperor of the Maurya Dynasty. He ruled the Indian subcontinent from 268 BCE to 232 BCE. He was the son of Bindusara and the grandson of the founder of the Maurya Dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya. Ashoka promoted the spread of Buddhism across ancient Asia.
