Gilf Kebir, also known as Gilf al-Kebir or Jilf al Kabir, is a plateau located between Egypt and Libya. Its English translation is the Great Barrier. This sandstone plateau which rises from the Libyan Desert floor houses Gilf Kebir National Park. It is an important World War II archaeology site in which many logistical machines and equipment are still found intact, also houses many neolithic petroglyphs such as Magharet el Kantara and Saharan rock art and many cliff paintings-pictographs and rock carvings-petroglyphs.
