As of 2019, Uttar Pradesh had the highest buffalo population in India, with around 33 million. Rajasthan came in second, followed by Gujarat. In total, India had 109.85 million buffaloes in 2019, which was an increase of 1.1% from the previous census in 2012. The female buffalo population increased by 8.61%, while the male buffalo population decreased by 42.35%. Buffaloes make up about 20.5% of India's total livestock.
