Nathu La mountain pass connects the Indian state of Sikkim with Tibet. The pass, at 4,310 m (14,140 ft) height, forms a part of an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road. The meaning of Nathu is “listening ears” and La means “pass” in Tibetan. Only citizens of India are allowed to visit the pass after obtaining a permit.
