Notes: He joined Samaj in 1858. He brought so much energy into the Samaj that the branches of the Samaj were opened outside Bengal. This missionary activity was his major contribution. Branches were opened in United Province, Punjab, Bombay, Madras and other towns. His another contribution was a renewed attention on social reforms. He brought in some radicalism to the movement, by attacking caste system, by focusing on the question of women's rights, by focusing widow remarriage, and inter-caste marriages and he sought to raise the caste status of Brahmo preachers to that of Brahmans. On the occasion of the anniversary festival on 24th January, 1868 Keshab laid the foundation stone of his mandir called the Tabernacle of New Dispensation.
