Lake Assal is a salt lake which lies 155 metres below sea level in the Afar Triangle. It is the third-lowest point on the Earth after the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. It is also the third-most saline body of water in the world after Don Juan Pond and Gaet'ale Pond. It also possesses the world's largest salt reserves.
