Notes: The first engineering college in India was established in 1847 in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. The college was originally called Roorkee College, but was renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854 after its founder, James Thomason. In 1949, the college became a university and was renamed Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
The college was established to train civil engineers. It used the large workshops and public buildings built for the Upper Ganges Canal.
The second oldest engineering college in India is the Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology, which was founded in 1906.
