Shiva Crater, discovered by Sankar Chatterjee and colleagues is a 500-kilometre diameter asteroid impact structure located in Arabian sea west of Mumbai. This crater was formed around 65 million years ago due to a comet or asteroid 40 kilometers wide. Due to this impact, hot material from Earth's mantle flooded south Indian region with vast amount of lava, creating a plateau known as the Deccan Traps.
