The Sangeet Natak Akademi, the highest institution in the field of performing arts in the country, was established in 1953 to preserve and promote the vast imperfect heritage of India's diverse culture expressed in the forms of music, dance and drama. The management of the academy is entrusted to its General Counsel. The President of the Academy is appointed by the President of India for a term of five years. The functions of the Academy are set out in the Memorandum of Association of the Academy, approved at the time of its registration as a Society on 11 September 1961. The registered office of the Academy is at Ravindra Bhavan, 35 Feroze Shah Road, New Delhi. The Sangeet Natak Akademi is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
