The Paikas are a traditional military or group of heroes formed in the territory of the ancient Kalinga kingdom in the state of Odisha. It still operates in the state capital Bhubaneswar, Khurda and Puri. The word "paika" is derived from the Sanskrit words "padtika (footman)" meaning infant, and akhada meaning a training ground or school. The heroes of Paika have served as a poor man in times of peace and who maintain social security as police under the sovereign's rule.
