The place where Arkavati merges with Kaveri is called Sangama and from this point the river Kaveri flows through a deep and narrow gorge which is about 3.5 kilometers downstream. In Kannada, Mekedatu means 'goat's leap.' The name came from an incident when a goat after being chased by a tiger jumped across the gorge to save itself.
