The Government of India Act of 1919 made the Indian Legislature bicameral. The act introduced bicameralism and direct elections for the first time in India. The act created a new office, Secretary of State for India, and a new office of Viceroy.

The act also provided for the classification of central and provincial subjects and kept income tax as a source of revenue for the central government. The act was later repealed by the Statute Law (Repeals) Act of 1976.
