The Vechur cow is named after the village of Vechoor, which is located in the Kottayam district of Kerala. The Vechur cow was once popular in Kerala, but became rare when native cattle were crossbred with exotic varieties. In the 1980s, the Vechur cow was near extinction. However, conservation efforts by Sosamma Iype, a professor of animal breeding and genetics, and her students saved the Vechur cow from extinction. Today, there are about 200 Vechur cows, with nearly 100 of them at the Veterinary College.
