Q. In which of the following sessions of Congress was the goal of ‘purna swaraj’ (complete independence) officially adopted?
Answer:
Lahore Session
Notes: Young leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru, Subhash Bose, and Satyamurthi were dissatisfied with the Nehru Report which talked about the 'Dominion Status'. They along with other delegates at Calcutta Session of 1928 pressed for the acceptance of 'Purna Swaraj'as the goal of Congress. But, Gandhiji, Motilal Nehru and many other older leaders realized that the national consensus on ‘Dominion Status’ that had been achieved with such a great difficulty should not be abandoned in such haste. In Calcutta session, it was decided to give the British government a one year ultimatum to concede the 'Dominion Status' else Congress would accept the goal of ‘Purna Swaraj’ (complete independence) at its next annual session. It was the Lahore session in which the Purna Swarajya was adopted as the only honorable goal Ind ians cou ld strive for Jawaharlal Nehru was made the President of Congress in this very session. After the adoptation of 'Purna Swaraj' as the ultimate goal, on 31 December, 1929 the newly adopted tri-color was hoisted.
