Q. In the context of the revolt of 1857 CE, the circulation of ‘chappattis’ and ‘red lotuses’ hint at which of the following?
Answer:
Organised nature of revolt
Notes: It is not clear yet whether the revolt of 1857 was spontaneous and unplanned or the result of a careful and secret organisation. Rebels have left no record behind. One group of historians and writers has asserted that the revolt was the result of a widespread and well-organised conspiracy. They point to the circulation of chappattis and red lotuses, propaganda by wandering sanyasis, faqirs and madaris. They say that many of the Indian regiments were carefully linked in a secret organisation which had fixed 31st May, 1857 as the day when all of them were to revolt. Other writers equally and forcefully deny that any careful planning went into the making of the revolt.
