tabular rock undercut around its edges by wind abrasion
Zeugen is a German word that means "like table". In geography, a zeugen is a table-shaped area of rock that forms in arid and semi-arid areas. Zeugens are formed when wind erodes soft rocks that are covered by hard rocks. The hard rocks that are left behind look like tables. Zeugens can vary in length from 1 meter to 30 meters.
Zeugens are formed when more resistant rock is reduced at a slower rate than softer rocks around it. Wind abrasion turns the desert surface into a ridge and furrow landscape. Rainfall and weathering also help in the formation of zeugens.
Zeugens are one of the landforms of mid and low latitude deserts. Other landforms include: Deflation hollows, Desert pavements, Ventifacts, Yardangs.
