There are many references to the cow in the Rig Veda and many entities and events are named with cow based terminologies. Rigvedic people were pastoralists, and battles were fought for the control of cow pens. These wars were called Gavisthi or search for cows in the rig Veda. Rig Vedic Aryans were aware of agriculture also and we find references of sowing, harvesting and threshing etc. But, compared to the prolific references to cow, agricultural references are fewer. So, it is believed that the Rig Vedic Aryans were semi-nomadic pastoralists that wandered in search for good pastureland and practiced agriculture as a secondary occupation.
