Q. Consider the following statement:
  1. Mir Qasim was appointed as the Nawab of Bengal by company after it defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah.
  2. Mir Qasim was replaced by Mir Jaffar by the East India Company as the Nawab of Bengal.
Which of the above is / are correct?

Answer: None of the above
Notes: After defeating Siraj-ud-Daulah in the battle of Plassey, East India Company made Mir Jafar the new nawab of Bengal. Mir Jafar had earlier betrayed Siraj-ud-Daulah in the battle of Plassey. He richly rewarded the company officials. But, Mir Jafar regretted the bargain he had struck. He discovered that it was impossible to meet the demands of company officials, who in turn began to dislike him for his incapacity in fulfilling their expectations. So, they forced him to abdicate in favour of his son-in-law, Mir Qasim, who in turn rewarded his benefactors. So, both the statements are incorrect.
