Queen Elizabeth-II creates history by attending cabinet meeting
Queen Elizabeth-II became the first peacetime British ruler since 1781 to attend a cabinet meeting.
This was the first time a monarch had attended a cabinet meeting since George III did so. George I abandoned chairing cabinet in 1717.
Britain has a tradition of the monarch receiving a weekly private and confidential briefing by the Prime Minister.
But in effect she mostly rubber stamps ministerial decisions, albeit sometimes in the presence of her privy council, of which an Indian origin Liberal Democrat Lord Navnit Dholakia and an Indian-born industrialist Lord Swraj Paul are members.
