Qatar Airways joins IATA’s Turbulence Aware Platform

According to Qatar Airways and International Air Transport Association (IATA) Qatar Airways will the first airline in Middle East to join IATA Turbulence Aware platform.

Highlights

  • IATA Turbulence Aware helps airlines to mitigate impact of turbulence which is a leading cause of passenger & crew injuries and higher fuel costs each year.
  • It will mitigate the impact of turbulence by pooling and sharing anonymized turbulence data collected from multiple participating airlines and thousands of daily flights.
  • The Real-time, accurate information will enable the pilots and dispatchers in choosing optimal flight paths, avoiding turbulence and flying at optimum levels in order to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Qatar Airways has equipped 120 aircraft with Turbulence Aware platform following this announcement.

Background

Qatar Airways was the first Middle Eastern airline that participated in Turbulence Aware initiative when it was launched in December 2018. Turbulence Aware has expanded into a fully operational platform since then with more than 1,500 aircraft sharing real-time turbulence data.

Significance of the move

This new solution, combining technology and big data for more efficient flight planning, will ensure a smooth journey, reduce fuel burn and this reduce the carbon emissions. This initiative will also help in increasing coverage area, providing real-time turbulence information to Qatar Airways aircrew and other participating airlines.
