Punjab Achieves 100% Piped Water Supply
Punjab has recently achieved milestone by providing 100% piped water supply to all rural households, falls under the central government’s ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme. The state government is also undertaking extensive projects to improve water quality and address scarcity.
Canal Water Projects
Punjab is currently implementing 15 major canal water projects. These projects have a total estimated cost of ₹2,174 crore. They aim to benefit approximately 1,706 villages and serve about 25 lakh people. This investment is crucial for enhancing water accessibility in rural areas.
Open Defecation-Free Status
All villages in Punjab have achieved open defecation-free (ODF) status. This accomplishment is part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural). Over 10,435 villages have attained ODF Plus status, which is considered desirable. Furthermore, 1,289 villages have achieved ODF Plus (model) status, showcasing exemplary sanitation practices.
Toilet Construction and Public Facilities
The state has constructed 5.64 lakh household toilets to improve sanitation. Additionally, 1,340 public conveniences have been established. These initiatives reflect the commitment to enhancing hygiene and sanitation in rural communities.
Waste Management Systems
Solid waste management systems have been implemented in 3,366 villages. This initiative aims to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability. Moreover, grey-water management facilities are available in 9,909 villages, contributing to effective water resource management.
These efforts impact the quality of life for rural residents in Punjab. Access to clean water and improved sanitation facilities leads to better health outcomes. The initiatives also encourage community well-being and environmental awareness.
