Puentemys mushaisaensis

Puentemys is the name of an extinct genus of turtles, that lived some 60 million years ago in what is now north-western South America. These turtles had a shell length of up to 1.51 metres. In July 2012, the Palaeontologists have unearthed what they believe is the fossil of a giant turtle belonging to a species of this genus and it has been named Puentemys mushaisaensis. It was discovered in Colombia’s La Puente pit in the Cerrejon Coal Mine, which is famous for its other treasures, including the world’s largest snake Titanoboa cerrejonensis.
