Public Accounts Committee reviews LAC infrastructure
On July 10, 2020, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) reviewed the construction of border roads in the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The committee also discussed about procurement of high-altitude clothing for the armed forces.
Highlights
The 22-member committee was chaired by the leader of Congress Party Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Currently there is no opposition leader in the house of Lok Sabha.
Public Accounts Committee
The Committee is constituted by members of Parliament of India. This committee along with the Financial Standing Committee and Estimates Committee are the three financial standing committees of Parliament of India.
Key features of the committee
The following are the basic features of the committee
- The committee consists of not more than 22 members. Fifteen of them are elected by Lok Sabha and the rest from Rajya Sabha.
- The Chairperson of the committee is appointed by the Lok Sabha speaker and his term of office is one year.
The Committee was first formed in 1921 in the wake of Montagu-Chelmsford reforms.
Leader of the Committee
Till independence, finance member of executive council was the chairperson of the committee. Post independence, till 1950, finance minister was the chairperson. Later till 1967, the chairperson of the committee was selected from the ruling party. After 1967, the chairperson of the committee is selected from the opposition. Usually the leader of opposition is the chairperson of the committee.
