Project SU.RE: Sustainable fashion project launched in Mumbai
Union Minister for Textiles Smriti Zubin Irani launched Project SURE, a move towards sustainable fashion at Lakmé Fashion Winter/Festive 2019 held in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The project aims to move towards sustainable fashion that contributes to a clean environment.
About SURE project
SURE stands for ‘Sustainable Resolution’. It is first holistic effort by the apparel industry towards gradually introducing a broader framework for establishing critical sustainability goals for the industry.
Objective: It is commitment by India’s apparel industry to set a sustainable pathway for Indian fashion industry. It also seeks to move apparel industry towards fashion that contributes to a clean environment.
Participating agencies: It was launched by Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI); United Nations in India; and IMG Reliance, the organizers of Lakme Fashion Week.
Features: This project is driven by leading industry association CMAI, along with leader in sustainable fashion IMG Reliance. It will help industry reduce its carbon emissions, increase resource efficiency, tackle waste and water management, and create positive social impact to achieve long-term sustainability targets.
Signatories: Top fashion and retail brands like Future Group, Aditya Birla Retail, Shoppers Stop, Arvind Brands, Max, Lifestyle, Raymond, House of Anita Dongre, Westside, Spykar, Levis, Bestsellers and Trends are signatories to the project. These signatory fashion and retail brands have pledged to source or utilise substantial portion of their total consumption using sustainable raw materials and processes by 2025.
