Post of ‘Chief of Defence Staff’  gets Cabinet Approval

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi chaired Union Cabinet has given its approval for the creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff on Tuesday, 24th December 2019. A separate department named- Department of Military Affairs (DMA) will be established under the Ministry of Defence. The Chief of Defence Staff will be the head of the Department of Military Affairs and will be the Chairman (Permanent) of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The post of the Chief of Defence Staff will be in the rank of a Four-Star General and will serve as the principal military advisor to the Defence Minister of the country on matters related to all tri-services. The post will integrate the functioning of the tri-services- Army, Air Force and Navy, as the Chief of Defence Staff will be the administer of the tri-services that will lead to higher defence management. The Chief of Defence Staff will not be able to exercise any military command (including over the three tri-service Chief’s). For matters exclusively related to their services, the respective Chief’s of the tri-services will continue to advise the Defence Minister.

The announcement for the creation of the post of the Chief of Defence staff was made by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during addressing the nation on the occasion of the 73rd Independence Day of India on 15th August 2019.
