PM Modi to attend 12th BRICS Summit

On November 17, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to attend the 12th BRICS summit that is to be hosted by Russia. The summit is to be held under the theme “Global Stability, Shared Security and Innovative Growth”.

The BRICS members to participate in the meeting are China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa.

Key Highlights

The meeting was to be held at St Peterburg in July 2020. However, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lastly Russia chaired the 7th BRICS summit.

Why is BRICS important to India?

  • India is currently in the middle of Global Geopolitics. It is highly challenging for India to carve a middle path to balance its interests between Russia, US and China. The BRICS platform is the best opportunity for India to balance China-Russia axis.
  • The BRICS community plays significant role in G20. All the BRICS members are members of G20 as well. The BRICS countries hold a common objective to reform the international monetary system to build a balanced international order. For instance, all the BRICS countries including China and India agreed on a debt pact to help poor countries hit by COVID-19.
  • The BRICS has recently emerged as the voice of developing countries. The western countries have been raising challenges on issues from climate change to World Trade Organization. This is crippling the developing countries.
  • BRICS acts as a common platform to work against terrorism.
