PM Modi inaugurates Metro Service and ENT hospital in Mauritius
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth jointly inaugurated two landmark projects in Mauritius via video conferencing. These projects are Phase-1 of Metro Express service and a new ENT Hospital.

India and Mauritius are both diverse democracies which are committed towards working for prosperity of their people and for peace in Indian Ocean region (IOR) and in world.
As per the two leaders, both of these projects will serve the people of Mauritius and are symbols of India’s strong commitment to development of Island nation. Moreover, the inauguration of project heralds a new chapter in shared history, heritage and cooperation between India and Mauritius.
The metro will provide a clean, efficient and time-saving transport service and will contribute to economic activities as also tourism.
Background
India is already involved in a number of projects in Mauritius which includes Hospitals and Housing projects. In 2016, India provided a Special Economic Package (SEP) of $353 million for execution of five projects in Indian Ocean country. India has also partnered with Mauritius in projects of direct public interest such as in 2018, a joint project provided e-tablets to young children. Also, new Supreme Court building and 1,000 social housing units are coming up rapidly in Mauritius. PM Modi has also conveyed India’s decision to support Mauritius in construction of a Renal unit and Medi-Clinics and Area Health Centres (AHC) through grant assistance.
The partnership between India-Mauratius is also important as Indian Ocean Economy holds great promise for people of both nations and it is crucial for well-being of citizens as well as peace and prosperity in Indian Ocean region and in world.
