PM Modi: 5 DRDO laboratories dedicated to nation
On January 2, 2020, PM Modi will dedicate five DRDO laboratories to the country. The laboratories are for young scientists to boost their research capabilities.
Highlights
PM Modi will inaugurate the laboratories during his 2-day visit to Bengaluru. The labs will act as a platform to identify young scientists up to the age of 35 years. DRDO will also exhibit some of its innovative products to the PM during his visit. The event is to be conducted at the Aeronautical Development Establishment, DRDO. During the event PM will also release the fourth instalments of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. The scheme was launched at national level based upon the success of Rythu Bandhu scheme in Telangana.
Significance
The laboratories involving young scientists will ensure that India remains forefront in advancements in the domain.
DRDO
There are over 52 Defence Research Development Organization Laboratories in the country. They are engaged in fields such as developing missiles, aeronautics, armaments, land combating engineering, etc. The organization operates under Ministry of Defence.
The aim of the organization is to reduce the reliance of India on defence imports. Today India imports over 45% to 50% of its defence products.
There are numerous successful DRDO products being used by Indian military. It includes LCA Tejas fighter jets, Nag Missile, Brahmos missile, ASTRA, ASAT, Electronic Warfare Technologies, etc.
