Plastic Pollution In India
A Plastic is any material which consists of any of the several synthetic/semi-synthetic organic compounds which are linked together and form a malleable surface which can then be molded into solid objects.
About plastics
- Due to the low cost, the comparative ease with which plastics can be manufactured and their versatility, plastics have found usage in several products of various shapes, sizes and uses.
- While the invention of plastic has made the carrying and storage of things much easier, it has not come without significant downsides of its own.?
- Plastics take a long time to degrade and hence, remain the ecosystem for a long duration. This causes land pollution and is also detrimental to the water bodies as it causes clogging and the jamming of water lines.
- The plastic discarded after use slowly enters the rivers, oceans and ground soil, polluting the entire environment along the way, creating issues with plants regeneration, blocking drains and canals and causing widespread mayhem to the ecosystems.
What is the situation of plastic pollution in India?
- As a figure put out by the Union Minister of Environment in 2018, India generates over 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste every day in India.
- Out of this giant pile of garbage, only 9,000 tonnes are collected and recycled by various plastic recycling firms, but that still leaves over 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste remain littered in the ecosystem, every day.
- The Indian Government is serious in its quest to tackle plastic waste and is looking forward to running several governments and volunteer missions to dispose of littered plastic waste.
