Pinaka Rocket System Flight Tests Successful
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently completed successful flight tests of the guided Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL), which took place on November 14, 2024. The completion marks an important step towards the system’s induction into the Indian Army. The enhanced range now exceeds 75 km.
Flight Test Phases
The flight tests were conducted in three distinct phases. Each phase took place at different field firing ranges. The tests assessed various parameters, including range, accuracy, consistency, and rate of fire. This was crucial for validating the Provisional Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQR). A total of twelve rockets were tested from each production agency using two upgraded in-service Pinaka launchers.
Current Capabilities
The Indian Army currently operates four Pinaka regiments. An additional six regiments are on order. The existing Pinaka Mk1 model has a range of 38 km. Plans are in place to develop extended-range versions, targeting ranges of 120 km and eventually 300 km. The Pinaka system is designed to fire various types of ammunition.
Future Developments
The Pinaka system is expected to become the mainstay of long-range rocket artillery for the Indian Army. Ongoing development includes a precision strike variant, which is entirely indigenous. This variant was designed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment in collaboration with several research centres.
Production Agencies
Munitions India Limited and Economic Explosives Limited are responsible for ammunition production. Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Larsen & Toubro handle the production of the Pinaka launcher and battery command post. This collaborative effort showcases India’s commitment to indigenous defence manufacturing.
International Interest
International interest in the Pinaka system is growing. France is currently evaluating the system for its own requirements. A team from France is expected to visit India soon for a detailed assessment. Additionally, Armenia has become the first export customer for the Pinaka system, signalling its potential in the global market.
Conclusion of Trials
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, confirmed that all prerequisite flight trials have been successfully completed. This paves the way for the Pinaka system’s induction into the Indian Army. The successful trials enhance India’s strategic capabilities and reinforce its position in the global defence landscape.
