Pasteurella multoceda

Pasteurella multoceda is a bacteria named after Louis Pasteur. It is commonly found in the respiratory tract of herbivorous animals such as cattle. It undergoes rapid multiplication when the host animal is under stress, is unhealthy or has low immunity. In such a case, the bacteria moves into the bloodstream leading to haemorrhagic septicaemia. This diseases causes diarrhoea and is often fatal. This bacteria was found to be behind the death of at least 6 elephants in Odisha recently.
