Parliamentary Committee Raises Concerns Over Lumpy Skin Disease Data

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Food Processing has expressed doubts regarding the accuracy of data on cattle deaths due to Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD). The committee noted a gap or mismatch between the figures provided by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) and the ground reality.

Challenges in Data Accuracy

The committee questioned the reliability of the data on cattle deaths and infections, highlighting discrepancies between the information furnished by the department and the actual situation on the ground. The outbreak of LSD in 2021-22 had severe consequences, causing widespread deaths and emaciation of cattle.

Dependence on State Governments for Data

According to the committee’s report, the DAHD relies on State Governments and Union Territories for data on infected, vaccinated, treated, and deceased cattle. While the department claimed that the states follow proper mechanisms for compiling accurate data, the committee expressed doubts about the accuracy of the information provided.

Committee’s Recommendations

The committee recommended that the department ensures proper compilation of data related to the spread of LSD infection and cattle mortality. Accurate data, according to the committee, is essential for understanding the gravity of the situation, controlling the disease, and preventing further spread. The committee emphasized the importance of addressing unreported and underreported cases.

LSD Outbreak Impact

The report highlighted the devastating impact of the LSD outbreak in 2021-22, causing significant harm to cattle populations, affecting milk production, and impacting farm income. LSD is an infectious viral disease transmitted through vectors like mosquitoes, biting flies, ticks, and by touch.

Call for Comprehensive Efforts

The committee recommended comprehensive efforts to enhance disease surveillance, treatment, and diagnostic infrastructure. It urged the improvement of veterinary services, capacity building for animal health professionals, and holistic measures to address animal pandemics effectively in the future.
