Pandou laidan

The Pandou laidan is also called the Martand Sun Temple. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Surya. It is located in the territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It was built in 8th century. Martand in Sanskrit means surya. It is now in ruins as it was destroyed by the Muslim ruler Sikandar Shah Miri.

About Pandou laidan

The temple was built was Lalitadiya Muktapida, the third ruler of Karkota dynasty. The temple was built on the top of a plateau. The whole of Kashmir valley can be viewed from the top of the temple. The architecture of the temple was based on Kashmiri culture. It is a blend of Chinese forms of architecture and Gupta and Gandharan forms architecture.

Temple Shrine

The primary shrine of the temple is located in the centre. It is surrounded by 84 smaller shrines. It is 220 feet long and 142 feet broad. It is the largest known peristyle in Kashmir. Peristyle is a continuous porch formed by rows of columns. It is surrounded by the perimeter of building. The primary shrine has a pyramidal top. Several Hindu gods and goddess are carved in the walls of the temples. They are Lord Vishnu, Ganga and Yamuna (river goddesses).

Site of National Importance

The Pandou laidan was declared as the Site of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
