Pakistan apex court orders arrest of PM

The supreme court of Pakistan has ordered the arrest of the PM, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, on the charges of corruption. The sudden announcement was made as Islamic scholar Tahir-ul-Qadri who led “million-man march” in protest to alleged corruption in the government. Many see this as an attempt by army and judiciary to oust the current civilian government led by Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP). Both the judiciary and the military are highly antagonistic towards the country’s civilian politicians, whom they regard as corrupt and unable to deal with Pakistan’s acute crises of domestic terrorism and a tumbling economy.

Ashraf became PM after the supreme court forced the previous PM Yousaf Raza Gilani to resign in 2012 on the charges of contempt of court.
