Over summering

Over summering is a phenomenon where migratory birds that arrive at a location for the winter stay over for several years. Eg: some flamingo at the Chilika Lake stay over despite the onset of monsoon (when most other birds like pelicans start going back) for several years. This is due to availability of food and water. Birds that exhibit this behaviour are called ‘over summer birds’. This phenomenon is being witnessed at the Chilika Lake over the last few years.
