Operation Sankalp
Operation Sankalp has been launched by the Indian Navy in the Gulf of Oman. The operation is aimed to re-assure Indian Flagged Vessels operating/ transiting through the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman following the maritime security incidents in the region.
Indian Navy has deployed INS Chennai and INS Sunayna in the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf to undertake Maritime Security operations. Besides Maritime Security operations Indian Navy aircraft is undertaking aerial surveillance in the region.
Tense Situation in the Region
The situation in the region got tense after an attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and four tankers off the United Arab Emirates on May 12. The US and Saudi Arabia have blamed Iran for the incidents and Iran has vehemently denied any involvement in the attack. Both the attacks took place at Strait of Hormuz, which is a major conduit for global oil supplies. Iran has also claimed to shot down the drones of the US which violated its air space. This has made the situation tense and volatile in the region.
